The entire old town of Salzburg was appointed world cutural heritage site by the UNESCO. The whole year round the city offers a top-class cultural programme: Mozart week, Easter-, Pentecost- and summer festivals. Salzburg's jazz autumn, as well as numerous atmospheric Advent- and Christmas events invite you to stay longer. The city constantly sets new impulses for an even greater range of cultural events.
The fortress "Hohensalzburg", constructed in the year 1077 by archbishop Gebhard, enlarged by archbishop Leonhard of Keutschach (1495-1519), is the largest completely preserved castle in central Europe. The medieval rooms and the castle museum are particularly worth seeing. Since 1892 the fortress can be reached comfortably with an inclined elevator from the Festungsgasse.
The "Getreidegasse" is Salzburg's most famous shopping lane with its countless elaborately ornamented signs, artistic portals and romantic arcaded courtyards.
